Northern New England Chapter of SWANA

About Us

ABOUT THE NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER

The Northern New England Chapter of SWANA was officially formed in 1998, with our chapter By-Laws ratified in 2000. Since that time, we have grown to 85 members strong, with a diverse board of directors representing three New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont). Our chapter convenes three times a year, typically once in each member state, to discuss relevant solid waste issues.

Annual Business Meeting

Typically held in August or September in New Hampshire, the Annual Business Meeting and Conference is a great opportunity to network with fellow solid waste members, to learn about upcoming changes in the solid waste industry, and to maintain continuing education for professional accreditation. Our technical conferences typically include a three-hour technical session and a site tour.

Technical Conferences

SWANA's Northern New England Chapter sponsors three one-day technical conferences per year which rotate between Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. These conferences are another great opportunity to meet with other solid waste professionals, get up to speed on upcoming solid waste trends, take tours of local facilities, and earn units towards continuing education credits.

Recent topics for technical conferences include Landfill Gas to Energy, Bioreactor Landfills, Construction and Demolition Fines, Universal Waste, and Medical Waste Treatment and Disposal. Conference attendees have also had the opportunity to tour the Pine Tree Landfill (Bangor, Maine) and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Facility (Hanover, New Hampshire).

Training Courses

In the past, the Northern New England Chapter has offered training concurrent with our technical conferences on Hazardous Waste Screening, Health and Safety Training for Municipal Solid Waste Operators, and Training of Sanitary Landfill Operating Personnel.

This year, the Northern New England Chapter of SWANA in cooperation with the Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA) are pleased to provide the Managing MSW Recycling Systems Certification course at NRRA’s 26th Annual Recycling Conference & Expo.
